Wednesday

Greetings again from sunny Reynosa! Actually, the weather these last couple of days has been quite rainy, and many of the lower areas, including the new neigborhood we’re ministering in, have had very muddy streets. But our ministry went on!

Today I’m bringing you reports from a couple of other people (not just me this time) about the events of the last day or so:

Yesterday’s evening ministries were slightly dampened by the heavy rains all over Reynosa. They had little effect on VBS, which was inside, although Teen Ministry was unable to meet in the plaza and had to go downstairs at the same church VBS was meeting in. Flooding was mild, at best, and we had little trouble getting home. We estimate that about 25 students came to the Teen Ministry yesterday–one came to Christ and others expressed interest in learning more. VBS had an interesting time repairing the puppet stage from last year, since the original curtain had been basically destroyed in a fairly severely flood in September.

This morning’s ministries were well-attended. Around 35 students were at VBS and Vicente, who has been our helper for several years, made a guest appearance as a payaso (clown). Several women from Campestre attended the Women’s Bible Study. About ten teens came to the Sports Ministry today.

We had two students and one leader who hadbeen (at different times) a bit under the weather, but all three have since recovered completely and should be participating in tonight’s ministry. Just another reminder of the importance of drinking a lot of water.

We thank you for your comments and prayers and will keep you updated!

Our first day of ministry is halfway through! But first, a travel update-

  • all of our bags arrived safely
  • we crossed the border with no difficulty
  • all of us are here in Reynosa–that’s right, all of us.

SWAM Arizona has safely arrived in Dallas and everyone from Atlanta has also made it safely to their airport in Houston. We are currently in the process of finalizing flight assignments but we should, God willing, all get into McAllen at different times through out the evening.

There are some weather-related delays in Houston but no cancellations as of now.

God has once again proved His provision for us through our safe, smooth flights and our great accommodations in Phoenix. We continue to trust him for his traveling mercies and ask for your continued prayers for us as well.

We’ll keep you updated as time and internet access allow.

The SWAM team has officially been split into two groups: eight of us are here in sunny (okay, it’s 10:40pm as I write this) Phoenix, Arizona, and the rest are safely landed in Atlanta, Georgia.

As you probably know, our flight from Charlotte to Houston was diverted midflight and we found ourselves back in Charlotte until around 8:00pm. We had some worries about how we would get to McAllen (our baggage has already gone on ahead of us), but it looks like God has worked it all out again, even though it’s really strange being nearly 2000 miles apart and 1300 miles from Reynosa.

Cassidy has expressed some dismay that we won’t be able to make church tomorrow and has offered to lead us in an impromtu service. All of us were shocked by the dusty, grassless wasteland that might be Phoenix–we couldn’t quite see it in the dark!

In any case, we at SWAM Arizona are put up nicely in the Sheraton Hotel and will be up bright and early (4:15am local) for our next flight to DFW. We will meet the other group at McAllen, although we will all arrive at different times.

As always, your continued prayer is appreciated and we’ve been amazed at how God has proven Himself over and over through these crazy circumstances. With so many attacks from the devil, who can imagine what good God has in store for us to do once we (finally) get to Reynosa?

It’s getting late–so good night and God bless from all of us here at SWAM Arizona.

We’re Delayed!

We’re delayed in Charlotte until other flight arrangements can be arranged.  We’ll keep you updated both here and via the phone chain once we have flight numbers and information. In the mean time, prayer is most appreciated!

At this time it appears we will be rerouted in separate groups through Phoneix, AZ and Atlanta, GA. We will be put up by US Air before we fly out of those destinations tomorrow. More information as it becomes available.

A couple of photos have been uploaded of the SWAM picnic. You can view them here.

Hey Y’all! this is the first time I’ve been able to access the internet since we arrived and I’m using someone else’s account. The guy who sets up the accounts is preoccupied with his wife and baby that was just born this week, so I don’t yet have an access code to my French Camp e-mail if you have sent me anything. Please call me on our French Camp phone if you need to communicate with me. I feel quite out of the loop right now without my internet connection! In any case, I will see y’all in Mexico!
